Independence with mobility is important for taking part in life activities. Unfortunately, many people using a wheelchair need help to get around. There are many possible reasons for needing help. This study involves the development of a self report tool to measure confidence with wheelchair mobility. Your involvement will help us to make sure our new confidence with wheelchair mobility tool provides us with good information.
You have been identified as eligible for this project because you:
· Use a manual wheelchair as your primary means of mobility
· Have at least 6 months of experience using a manual wheelchair
· Live in the community
· Are 19 years of age or older
Purpose of the Study:
The purpose of this study is to develop a new self report tool to measure confidence with wheelchair mobility and to assess the quality of the information it provides.
We are looking for subjects interested in participating in the research study - adults who live in the community and have used a manual wheelchair as their primary means of mobility (at least 4 hours per day) for at least the last 6 months. Participation involves attending 2 sessions at the Rehab Centre with a one-week period, and we will provide $70 compensation ($35 for each session).
The Study Involves:
If you choose to take part in this study, you will be required to attend two testing sessions. These sessions will take place at the Nova Scotia Rehab Centre. The first session will take about 1 hour. The second session will take about 2-3 hours. We will be gathering data about your wheelchair use and health. We will also be completing measures about your problem solving ability, wheelchair confidence, wheelchair skill, and social support.
Participation is Voluntary:
Taking part in this study is entirely voluntary. You may refuse to take part or withdraw at any time. You do not have to provide reasons for your decision. Your confidentiality will be respected at all times. Information about your identity will not be released or published without your consent.
Study will take place at:
Nova Scotia Rehabilitation Centre
1341 Summer Street,
Halifax, NS, Canada
B3H 4K4
If you are interested in taking part in the study or if you would like more information please call Mark Burley at 902-473-7362. We look forward to hearing from you soon.
